State Representative Rebekah Warren Announces Scholarship Awards

LANSING - In an effort to encourage our students to pursue higher education for the betterment of both themselves and our state, State Representative Rebekah Warren (D-Ann Arbor) has announced that she will again award two $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who currently reside in the 53rd district and plan to attend a university, college, technical or trade school.

“Without question, education is the gateway to opportunity and the key to a successful future,” Warren said. “One of the central tenets of my campaign was making higher education more affordable and accessible to all. While I remain wholly committed to maintaining and increasing state funding, I also want to do my part to ensure that our students receive the education they need to compete in our global economy.”

The scholarship money will come out of her Envision Michigan Fund, which was established in order to better promote progressive policies, educational opportunities and active citizenship in our state.

“Our youth provide our greatest resource and hope for the future of Michigan. I have founded this scholarship in an effort to support those young people who want to help lead us to a stronger and more vibrant tomorrow,” Warren said.

Students may be nominated for the award, or simply apply themselves. Those students who are nominated will be subsequently asked to complete the application. High school counselors and principals in the 53rd district have been notified about the scholarship and have copies of both the nomination and application forms.

Nomination forms must be returned by Friday, March 6, and applications returned by Tuesday, March 31. The forms can also be accessed electronically here.

In Their Own Words
“I want to thank Rebekah for her continued strong leadership in protecting children from environmental and health hazards. We could not even begin to accomplish our agenda without her leadership.”

"Rebekah Warren has shown great dedication and talent in her first term in the Michigan State House. Her enthusiasm, intelligence and work ethic provide tremendous service for her constituents. She certainly merits re-election and I look forward to working with her on issues regarding Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County and the State of Michigan."
Congressman John Dingell
U.S. House of Representatives
15th District

“Rebekah’s extraordinary leadership has been irreplaceable and invaluable. We are very lucky to have such a fantastic champion of choice in the legislature and are honored to count her among our friends.”

"I enthusiastically endorse Rebekah Warren because she will be a stellar state representative. Michigan needs someone who will fight for choice for women, strong environmental protection, and appropriate economic incentives for Michigan. I believe Rebekah also has the ability to reach across the political divide and engage the other side in conversation, eventually resulting in gains for all of Michigan."
Philip Zazove, M.D.

"As Chair of the Michigan House Great Lakes and Environment Committee, Representative Warren is one of the real leaders fighting for our state's future."
Sue Kelly, Political Chair
Michigan Chapter Sierra Club

"Too often we must choose between a candidate with clear and consistent moral commitments to the issues we support or a candidate who can work with others in such a way as to actually achieve progress toward those goals. No such choice is needed when supporting Rebekah! She is both unswerving in her commitments and effective in her negotiations. I am grateful for the opportunity to support her in her campaign for state rep from the 53rd District."
Donna Wegryn
Former Member, Ann Arbor Board of Education

"As someone quite involved in state issues, I thought long and hard before making an endorsement. I have concluded that Rebekah Warren would be the ideal representative for our district. She has the integrity and expertise to get the right jobs done, and always with grace, competence, and rock-solid experience. We are lucky she is running."

"Rebekah Warren has the progressive credentials to represent the 53rd District. She also has keen knowledge of the legislative process. However, as a member of the gay community, I feel the most important reason to vote for Rebekah is her unswerving commitment to the rights of LGBT citizens. When most politicians were running scared and would not openly support us during the Prop 2 campaign, Rebekah stepped up and did more for our cause then any other straight person in the state of Michigan. Principles, courage, and skills will make Rebekah an outstanding legislator."
