Dear Friends,

My name is Joe Beverly, but a lot of my friends and colleagues know me simply as J. I am running as a Democrat for Chief Justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals. This is one of the most important judicial offices in Texas. The Fourteenth Court decides appeals from civil and criminal courts in ten Texas counties, including Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller and Washington. More than five million Texans live in these counties and they deserve the very best our judicial system has to offer.

I know what practicing lawyers representing real clients with difficult cases face everyday in their practice. I have represented all types of clients -- from defending multinational corporations to suing to collect insurance benefits for a widow whose house burned down. I have represented huge corporations, industry groups, small business owners and individuals. I will never forget what it’s like in the real world for both sides of the bar and their clients. 

I am running because I believe that everyone is equal in the eyes of the law and that no person deserves preferential treatment in the courts of Texas because of who they are, who they know or how much money they have. I believe our judicial system is the bedrock of our democracy and it cannot be for sale to the highest bidder. Texas citizens deserve fair, impartial and efficient courts that respect the rule of law while exercising common sense in making decisions. Texas courts are not the place for a judge to advance their own personal political agendas. Rather, the role of the judge is to insure the integrity of the Courts and deal with all parties with utmost fairness, honesty and impartiality. That is my pledge to you.
