2008 Sunshine Peace Award
Cathy Church Receives National Peace Award Cathy Church, Independent candidate in the upcoming election for Marquette County Prosecutor, is a recipient of the 2008 Sunshine Peace Award. The Sunshine Lady Foundation was established in 1996 through the vision and determination of Doris Buffett, the sister of financier and philanthropist, Warren Buffet. On August 9, 2008, at an awards banquet in Wilmington, North Carolina, Ms. Church was honored as one of twenty extraordinary individuals who have worked in the domestic violence field and made a positive difference in the lives of battered women and their children. Candidates for the prestigious award are selected from across the nation for excellence in developing resources and facilitating the social change necessary to end violence against women and children. Those honored received a crystal dove of peace and a $5000 check in recognition of their contribution to their community. An additional $5000 check was also presented to Ms. Church to donate to a non-profit agency. Cathy Church’s contributions to this community are far reaching. After working for 14 years as an Assistant Prosecutor for Marquette County, she founded Access Justice Now, a grass-root non-profit agency, dedicated to providing service, solace, legal representation and education for victim’s of intimate violence. Currently, Ms. Church is volunteering as the agency’s CEO, serves as a board member of the United Way of Marquette County and is spearheading an effort to reinstate the Marquette Chapter of the League of Women Voters. She is an adjunct professor and a member of Sexual Harassment Task Force at Northern Michigan University. Cathy Church is a member of the state Bar of Michigan Special Committee on Domestic Violence and a certified domestic violence trainer for the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Commission. In addition to the Sunshine Peace Award, Cathy Church also earned the 1997 Outstanding Prosecutor Award from the Michigan Family Support Council. Nominated by a group of grateful domestic violence survivors, Ms. Church was also honored at the 2006 Citizen Hero Rose Day from Zonta International, Marquette Chapter.
