Public Works
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - June 23, 2009 - It seems everyone has an opinion about the Public Works Department. It’s no wonder; Public Works is one of the more visible departments in the town. Following is a list of Public Works responsibilities right off of Hamden’s official web site: Bulk Trash, Snow Plowing/Sanding, Street Sweeping, Replacing Catch Basins, Road/Curb Repair, Pot Holes, Sidewalk Replacement, Tree Removal, Tree Trimming, Sewer Cleaning, Transfer Station Operations and Removing Deceased Animals. That’s some list.

With a list like this it isn’t hard to see that there is a tremendous demand placed on the department. It comes down to money and resources. (more)

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - June 19, 2009 - The November elections are rapidly approaching. Yet curiously, Scott Jackson and Jim Leddy have been silent on their ideas for the Town of Hamden. Over the course of the last six years I have written numerous articles, spoken many times before the council, voiced my opinion from the legislative bench over a two term period, and have made my ideas known through radio and television advertising. I also participated in seven debates in the last election. Additionally, I have walked Hamden from Highwood to Mt. Carmel, and every neighborhood in between, and addressed the many ideas and concerns residents have.

However, the silence from the opposing camp is deafening. What are their policies? How do their thoughts differ from the tax and spend mentality of the current administration? Hamden residents want to know. Therefore, let me say it plainly, I challenge both Scott Jackson and Jim Leddy to a series of debates so that the general public can consider their ideas with my own. The Recent Budget Approval
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - May 22, 2009 - Hamden’s Legislative Council recently approved the 2009-2010 fiscal budget by a vote of 12 to 3. The headline as reported in the Post-Chronicle reads, “Hamden homeowners to see slight tax cut”. If you only read the headline you would have been easily led to believe all is well with Hamden’s budget. This, of course, is the reaction the Henrici/Jackson administration had hoped to gain in an election year. However, the financial reality is considerably different from the headline. (more)

Better Solutions for Hamden
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - May 4, 2009 - As I begin to walk Hamden's neighborhoods to meet residents and hear their comments and concerns a common theme is emerging -taxes have skyrocketed, schools need major improvement, and our roads and sidewalks are a mess. Residents have become tired of excuses and inaction, cronyism, lack of financial transparency and wasteful town government spending.

I have plans to deal with these issues and more, but in order for me to bring about change in Hamden; I need your vote on Election Day. In American politics candidates must declare a political affiliation. In most cases it is Republican, Democrat or Independent. In Hamden a Republican hasn't been elected Mayor in since 1997, and Republicans have not had control of the Legislative Council since 1987. (more)

Thoughts on the Education Budget
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - April 18, 2009 - The education budget seems to inspire passionate debate on both sides. There is a lot at stake. Our public school system is where the next generation of citizens develop into productive members of society. A good quality education system also helps to maintain property values and attract people to move to our town.

The Hamden public school system is expected to meet the needs of diverse and varied population. Modern day education is not simply a chalk board and one room schoolhouse. It is in fact a highly complex organization of talented, well educated professionals who must meet and comply with a multitude of rules and regulations, state mandates, special education requirements and negotiated labor agreements. A lapse in compliance in any of these areas may find the town faced with litigation and penalties that have the potential of making the current budget request seem bearable. (more)

Gambardella Calls Henrici Budget A Bogus Shell Game
Campaign Press Release

HAMDEN - March 17, 2009 - Mayor Henrici has given the taxpayers of Hamden three back to back tax increases and significantly increased spending to historic levels since he took office in 2005.

His 2009-2010 budget represents a 12 cent per day reduction in property taxes to the average Hamden home owner. This is a clear indication that we have been severely overtaxed for the past three years, and the Mayor is out of touch with the needs of residents.

The Mayor’s proposed budget is an election year gimmick that is unrealistic and will have to be rectified by the Legislative Council through line by line analysis. (more)

Another Look at the Mayor's Project
By Ron Gambardella

HAMDEN - February 9, 2009 - Recently the New Haven register reported the following: “Town officials now are looking at a $40.89 million estimate for the Memorial Town Hall …” This is a far cry from when the mayor first announced that he would be able to complete the new police department for $20 M. It is in the administration’s best interest to keep the project price as low as possible until it gets the necessary approvals. Then, once the project has been approved, price will no longer matter. The cost will have to be borne by the taxpayers without regard to the final outcome. (more)
