Earlier this year when Dave Stewart was recording American Prayer, a song he originally co-wrote with Bono, the phrase, "When you get to the top of the mountain, remember me" seemed to take on a whole new resonance, given the inspirational candidacy of Barack Obama. The song always contained one of his favorite passages from Dr. King, which was hauntingly delivered the night before he was assassinated. King says: "I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land!" People long for a connection— whether it is to music, to their country, or to a big idea. Regardless of what happens in November, Senator Obama has reminded millions of people that they have the power to connect to bigger ideas. He is, in essence, the embodiment of a new anthem for change. He has continued King's narrative from what was once thought of as a dream to a reality. Dave found it especially relevant that Barack Obama will accept the Democratic Party Nomination for President 45 years to the day of King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
When we were originally writing the song, Bono was crafting the words in a way that would make people think about the fact that 'America' as a concept was a truly great idea, based on the bedrock of equality. He find it more pertinent than ever to release it now; to the moment America finds itself in, daring to re-imagine itself and its place in the world.

Fired Up, Ready to Go
In December 2007, when Barack Obama came to Seattle, Joe Bergevin and his family went to listen to him speak. At one point, Joe's daughter Chloe broke through the rope line and stood in front of the Senator. He commented on her, saying, "Come on up honey, it's OK, you can come up here." While she (being 1 year old) declined, Joe shook hands with Barack after the event, and commented to him, "I think you're going to get the job done." Barack replied to Joe, "With your help I will, with your help." At that moment, Joe felt he had been charged with a challenge, and started to think of how he could apply his skills to the task of helping get Barack Obama elected. Within a few weeks, Joe was watching the video feed online of Barack Obama and Oprah together on stage and inspiration set in. That day, Obama told a story about one person, Edith Childs, who energized others with a "fired up, ready to go," chant at one of his campaign stops. Inspired by Obama's "One voice can change the world" speech, Joe wrote some lyrics and rough chords that same day, then called his brother Jon to help him finish and arrange the song. The song is named after Edith's chant. Ten days later an epic recording was born with the intention of spreading Obama's hopeful message. Contributors include lead singer Reverend Pat Wright and her renowned Total Experience Gospel Choir, drummer Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam, and lead singer Jake Bergevin.

Viva Obama '08
Featuring: Mariachi Aguilas de Mexico -- English Translation:
To the candidate who is Barack Obama
I sing this corrido with all my soul
He was born humble without pretension
He began in the streets of Chicago
Working to achieve a vision
To protect the working people
And bring us all together in this great nation
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
Families united and safe and even with a health care plan
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
A candidate fighting for our nation
It doesn't matter if you're from San Antonio
It doesn't matter if you're from Corpus Christi
From Dallas, from the Valley, from Houston or from El Paso
What matters is that we vote for Obama
Because his struggle is also our struggle, and today we urgently need a change
Let's unite with our great friend
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
Families united and safe and even with a health care plan
Viva Obama! Viva Obama!
A candidate fighting for our nation
