TERRY BARNICH

1953-2009

R.I.P.

Terry Barnich was a proud member of the 32nd Ward Republican Organization.  A resident of the DePaul neighborhood, Terry was one of the more distinguished Republicans living in our ward, having served as Counsel to Governor Jim Thompson and Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission.  An accomplished Illinois lawyer, Terry also saw public service as a means of honoring his American heritage, giving back to the greater community, and improving the lives of all.  In this spirit, he went to Iraq in 2007 to serve with the Iraq Transition Assistance Office (ITAO) of the U.S. Department of State.  His assignment required a one year commitment, but Terry was so engaged in the work to help build a new democracy in Iraq that he stayed for almost two and a half years.  Tragically, on May 25, 2009, Memorial Day, Terry was killed with two other Americans by a roadside bomb while on convoy in Fallujah.  His loss is gravely felt by all who had the privilege to know him.

I first met Terry about 30 years ago when we were young college graduates enthusiastically involved with the United Republican Fund in Chicago.  Terry made friends easily, and even the dreariest political event would be lifted by Terry's presence.  I enjoyed our many times together over the years and cheered his many successes.  When Terry's neighborhood was annexed to the 32nd Ward in 2001, I was flattered that Terry joined in to help our 32nd Ward Republican Organization.  His local friends and I were eagerly awaiting his return to Chicago this summer; therefore, the shock of his death is ever more stunning.  I will miss him very much.

For those of you who knew Terry, his family will be conducting a visitation in his memory on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from 4 to 7 pm at the University Club of Chicago, Monroe and Michigan Avenue.  A funeral mass will be celebrated on June 3, 2009 at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, Southport and Wellington.
