Commissioner Bruno A. Barreiro thanks you for visiting his website. Here you can access information regarding his political career, the opportunity to volunteer your time to the campaign, make contributions, as well as view pictures of Commissioner Barreiro throughout the years.  His perseverance to always help and serve the community has been evident first as a State Representative and now as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner.

Commissioner Barreiro began his political career in 1992 when he was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives, representing District 107.  He served in this capacity from 1992 to 1998. As Chairman of the Tourism Committee, he received many accolades for the promotion of tourism. He also served on the General Government Appropriations and Long Term Care Committees.

During a special election held on June 2, 1998, Commissioner Barreiro was elected into the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners to represent District 5. As a Commissioner, he has been able to help the community on a one-to-one basis by going out and helping those in need as well as bringing much needed services to the community. District 5 encompasses parts of the City of Miami and the City of Miami Beach as wells as the communities of Little Havana, Downtown and South Beach. In 1999, Commissioner Barreiro sponsored the resolution that created the Golden Passport program, which provides free transportation to seniors 65 years and older. It has been reported that more than 160,000 seniors participate in the program.

As Commissioner, he has served on various committees. Most recently, he has served as Chairman for the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the Miami-Dade County General Obligation Bond Committee, the Office of Public Transportation Management Subcommittee, and the Internal Management and Fiscal Responsibility Committee.  Currently, Commissioner Barreiro serves as the Chairman of the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization.

 

On November 28, 2006, Commissioner Barreiro was selected by his colleagues to serve for two years as Chairman of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.  As Chairman, he presides over the meetings of the Board of County Commissioners, which is Miami-Dade’s Legislative Branch.
