Why should you be elected?

I have consistently demonstrated dedication and unwavering commitment as an advocate for Morrisville citizens as we tackle the challenges of our community.  I keep an open mind; listen to the views of all constituents; evaluate the facts; and work with my fellow elected officials arriving at responsible decisions.  Once re-elected, I will continue to build on our successes, improving our quality of life.  Top priorities will continue to include:

ü      Transportation improvements

ü      Managing growth

ü      Development of Town Center plan

ü      Greenway construction

ü      Addressing storm water issues

ü      Maintaining a strong fiscal standing.

What should the town do to relieve traffic congestion?

Morrisville has long been known as the ‘Heart of the Triangle’.  We are geographically in the center of the Triangle.  Many of the roadways in Morrisville are the only means of transportation for commuters driving to/from RTP, I40 and RDU.  The Town of Morrisville has been and will continue to be proactive in advocating for regional cooperation and regional solutions to our traffic issues.  We continue to coordinate with our municipal neighbors on development and transportation improvements.  The major roadways in Morrisville experiencing the greatest congestion are funded and maintained by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.  Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more difficult to be solely dependent on NC DOT.  I would like to see a reevaluation of how DOT allocates state and federal funds.  Specific attention needs to be given to the state’s equity formula and the distributions from the Highway Trust Fund.   I would be supportive of a special legislative session on transportation issues.

Along with the need to continue to work regionally on transportation issues, the Town of Morrisville has begun a Land Use and Transportation Plan Update.  During this planning process we must re-prioritize our transportation projects, identify funding sources/partners, and review growth and development’s role in transportation improvements.  Helping to solve the transportation challenges are citizens appointed to the Morrisville Land Use and Transportation Plan Advisory Committee.

In summary, I support the following:

ü      Lobby the State Legislature to reevaluate how the North Carolina Department of Transportation allocates state and federal funds.  Specific attention needs to be given to the state’s equity formula and the distributions from the Highway Trust Fund.

ü      Update Morrisville’s Land Use and Transportation Plan to re-prioritize transportation projects, identify funding sources/partners, and review growth and development’s role in transportation improvements.

ü      Continue to be proactive in advocating for regional cooperation and regional solutions to our traffic issues; continue to coordinate with our municipal neighbors on development and transportation improvements.

Should Morrisville develop a distinctive town center?

Yes, and Morrisville is already in the process of developing a town center.  Our award winning Town Center Plan (Morrisville has received the 2007 State Planning Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association) was approved by the Morrisville Board of Commissioners on January 22, 2007.  Our year long planning process had outstanding public participation.  The plan describes the community’s vision for this area, laying the groundwork for a vibrant focal point that honors Morrisville’s history and creates a center of community into the future.  The plan includes:

  • Preservation of historic structures;
  • A main street commercial district;
  • Cultural Arts Facility;
  • Public parks;
  • Transportation improvements;
  • Greenway and sidewalk connections;
  • New housing opportunities;
  • Implementation strategies supporting the plan.
