As your Town Supervisor I promise full disclosure on all aspects of your local government. On October 13, 2009 the Phelps Town Board lead by Mr. Teed appeared to quickly push Local Law #3 Manure Storage Facilities into law after a public hearing. To my surprise the agriculture community only had about a week of notice before there was one more law on the books dictating how they should do business. I’m not saying that the Town Board did not follow the law in announcing the Public Hearing, but was it ethical in keeping a tight lid on the public hearing?
I am happy to report that the town did table the law until it can be properly reviewed.
My suggestion is to form an agriculture committee made up of both agriculture and non agriculture town residents. The committee should be lead by one elected board member to chair the committee and to also report at monthly board meetings. The Agriculture committee should also work with the planning board.
Full disclosure is the best way to lead our town into the future.
