Born in Royal Oak, Nancy Skinner is one of Charles and Anna Skinner’s six children. She attended the University of Michigan and majored in finance and accounting.
Nancy’s professional career has been about enacting innovative solutions to seemingly insurmountable challenges. She took her finance degree and worked for the Ilitch family, leading the renovation of the Fox Theatre at a time when few saw the potential in downtown Detroit. She then went on to test her business skills and passion for the environment to promote environmentally sustainable developments following the floods of 1993. After witnessing first-hand the devastation of natural disasters and dangerous environmental practices that were previously unquestioned, Nancy persuaded the White House to assemble a team of ten federal agencies, and the nations’ leading architects and engineers, to prevent future tragedies. She did this by rebuilding two entire towns away from the floodplain using the principles of sustainable development.
In 1998, Nancy took her commitment for progressive change to the airwaves and hosted a local radio show that was later syndicated on over 400 stations. She also worked as a regular commentator on CNN, MSNBC and the Fox News Channel. Nancy returned home to host a progressive talk radio program on 1310 AM.
After spending her entire professional life watching, researching, and battling the increasingly disturbing state of affairs under Republican leadership, most evident in the Bush Administration and Joe Knollenberg, Nancy realized she could no longer stand on the sidelines.
In 2006, Nancy came closer than anyone ever has to beating rubber stamp Joe Knollenberg, losing by only 51% to 47%. Following her very near victory, which has been referred to as "Joe Knollenberg's near-death experience," she worked as Chief of Staff for Michigan's First Gentleman, Dan Mulhern. After she resigned from that post in August, 2007, she moved back to her hometown of Royal Oak and founded Skinner Communications; a private consulting firm that specializes in developing business plans and communication strategies, focusing on companies that specialize in alternative energy.
Nancy is the only candidate in the 2008 race who has run against Joe and shown that she can beat him if she has the financial resources to get the word out. Your contributions will help her win the nomination to finish the job in 2008. Nancy has the passion and progressive positions on the issues--the Iraq war, a woman's right to choose, stem cell research, the environment, jobs, health care, etc.-- to make a courageous congresswoman who will fight for Democratic values.
Nancy believes our auto industry will recover and grow when we embrace the future and push for national funding to leapfrog to technologies like fuel cells, advanced hybrids and the national infrastructure at fueling stations to accommodate them. This is a win win for the economy and the environment.
