Education
Rebekah knows that if we are to reinvent our economy successfully, we need a strong, well-funded public education system. While she believes that we have many dedicated teachers, school officials, and support staff working to make our public schools a safe, quality learning environment, she also believes that we must meet them half-way, investing in our schools, our children, and our future.

Recognizing that students and parents pay more for tuition when the state allocates fewer dollars to public universities and colleges, Rebekah has worked to increase investment in higher education, expand eligibility for Michigan Promise Grant Awards (Public Act 42 of 2007), and secure state funding for capital projects such as Washtenaw Community College's Technical and Industrial Building renovations (House Concurrent Resolution 27). At the same time she has offered immediate help to several families in the 53rd District by creating the Envision Michigan Fund, which offers two to three scholarships per year to high school seniors who plan to pursue higher education. For more information about how to apply, please contact Sarah. |

As a proponent of smaller class size, more one-to-one instructional time, and comprehensive early childhood education programs, Rebekah has supported Governor Granholm’s recent efforts to create smaller high schools and promote full day kindergarten. She believes such efforts not only help identify and support our struggling students, but also provide the strong foundation all of our students need to be successful in this changing economy. |

Finally, aware that children must feel safe in order to have a positive learning experience, Rebekah supported “Matt’s Safe Schools Law” (House Bill 4162), which requires our public schools to create and adopt policies that prohibit harassment, intimidation and bullying. |
