MARCH 20, 2006 GOP DAY AT THE WHEATON TRAIN STATION A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS

I had the honor of arranging the March 20 GOP Day at the Wheaton train station and I am very happy to report that it a tremendous success -- the November 6 GOP Day at the Wheaton train station will be even more successful.  Many thanks to the candidates who funded free gourmet coffee and delicious pastries for the commuters -- Franco Coladipietro, Grant Eckhoff, Bob Heap, Gwen Henry, Jim Oberweis, and Kaaren Oldfield.  Many thanks to all the candidates who greeted commuters and/or spoke with the news media including Joe Birkett, Franco Coladipietro, Mike Fortner, Ron Gidwitz, Gwen Henry, Randy Hultgren, Roger Jenisch, Jim Oberweis, and Kaaren Oldfield.  Many thanks to the news media that covered the event including CBS2, NBC5, ABC7, WGN, and the Chicago Tribune.

2004 GENERAL ELECTION

Needless-to-say, many thanks to everyone who displayed yard signs for and voted for President Bush, Vice President Cheney, Alan Keyes, and all the other Republican candidates.  Except for Keyes, all Republican candidates on Milton Precinct 9 ballots were elected.  According to unofficial results, of the 442 registered voters in the precinct, 359 or 81% cast ballots.  218 or 61% voted for Bush for President and Cheney for Vice President, 145 or 40% voted for Keyes for U.S. Senator, 212 or 59% voted for Hyde for U.S. Representative, 237 or 66% voted for Hultgren for Illinois Representative, 230 or 64% voted for Siekmann for Coroner, 230 or 64% voted for Kachiroubas for Recorder, and 252 or 70% voted for Olson for County Board.  Birkett, Rasins, Bucholz, and Popejoy ran unopposed.

The table shows that support for Bush-Cheney and for Keyes is stronger in the precinct than in Milton Township, DuPage County, Illinois, and the United States as a whole.  While I am very glad about that, I am disappointed that the precinct was not in the top ten of Milton Township’s 109 precincts in terms of percent overall turnout, percent vote for Bush-Cheney, or percent vote for Keyes.  To be in the top ten precincts, we needed an 85% overall turnout – we had only 81%; a 68% vote for Bush-Cheney – we had only 61%; and a 47% vote for Keyes – we had only 40%.  Needless-to-say, it saddened me to see so many Democrat signs and so many votes for Democrat candidates in DuPage County, in Milton Township, in Wheaton, and especially in this precinct.

ALAN KEYES' SEPTEMBER 11, 2004 PATRIOT DAY SPEECH WARMLY RECEIVED IN WHEATON
Over 500 came to Wheaton's beautiful Memorial Park on Saturday, September 11, 2004, to meet Alan Keyes and to hear his remarks concerning Patriot Day and his campaign. Alan was warmly received by the crowd which gave him several standing ovations during his 20-minute speech. State Senators Kirk Dillard and Peter Roskam served as Master of Ceremonies.

Senator Dillard introduced the elected officials and candidates who were on the bandshell stage with Alan while he gave his speech -- State Senator Raymond Soden, State Representative Randy Hultgren, State Representative Candidate Roger Jenisch, DuPage County Board Commissioner Debra Olson, DuPage Coroner candidate Peter Siekmann, Illinois GOP State Central Committeeman Ron Smith, Milton Township Assessor Jim Gumm, and Milton Township Trustee Don Sender. The bandshell stage is the same one that Bob Dole gave a speech from immediately after he walked in Wheaton's 1996 Independence Day Parade -- CNN broadcast that speech live.

Senator Dillard recognized event attendees including DuPage County Auditor Jim Rasins, DuPage County Regional Superintendent of Schools Darlene Ruscitti, DuPage Regional School Board Trustee Tim Whelan, and District 89 School Board Trustee Howard Levine. He recognized the event's sponsors -- State Farm Insurance Agent Mark Prutzman, Oberweis Dairy, John Cox, AllStar Printing, himself, Randy Hultgren, Debra Olson, Pete Siekmann, Tim Whelan, Don Sender, and Diersen Consulting.

Senator Roskam gave some remarks concerning September 11 and he introduced Alan.

Apparently, even though the Daily Herald, the Wheaton Leader, and the Wheaton Sun had been asked to cover the event, the only reporters who covered the event were Rich Samuels with WTTW11's Chicago Tonight and Dave Diersen with GOPUSA.com. Samuels and Diersen made VHS recordings of Alan's speech. Event photographers included Matt Ferguson and Don Sender.

The free event provided attendees with a great opportunity to enjoy great food, to meet their neighbors, to meet their elected officials, and to meet candidates who will appear on November 2 ballots in DuPage County. On July 5 last year, 200 attended a similar event in Wheaton's Prairie Path Park, including Jack Ryan, Jim Oberweis, Andy McKenna, Chirinjeev Kathuria, and John Cox.

Attendees at this year's event enjoyed hot dogs and Polish sausages personally handed out by Debbie Malek from her cart. Debbie normally locates her cart at Cross and Wesley Streets at the southeast corner of Wheaton's Adam's Park, across the street from Wheaton's Public Library. All the hot dogs and sausages were paid for by State Farm Insurance Agent Mark Prutzman. In its September 12, 2004 edition, the Daily Herald ran a major front page story on Debbie that included six pictures and quotes from Ron Smith.

Attendees also enjoyed Oberweis ice cream and flavored milk personally handed out by Jim Oberweis and Sandy Rios from an Oberweis truck. Attendees enjoyed Jays potato chips provided by John Cox, salads and desserts that attendees brought to the picnic or were purchased with cash contributions, and soft drinks and ice paid for by the sponsors. Event costs included $180 for a $1 million insurance policy required for City of Wheaton and Wheaton Park District permits. The many people who helped make the event successful include Karen Diersen, Mark Prutzman, Bill Hogan, Mark Stern, and Gary Muehlfelt.

Attendees included Rod McCulloch, Peter LaBarbera, Frank Penn, Richard Johns, Robert Gordon, George Kocan, Robert Sandberg, Leonard Sanchez, Lori Carlson, Richard Russo, Steve Carlson, Keith Carlson, Jason Hinkle, Mark Klage, Patrick Ryan, and Dr. Bob Krzyzewski.

Alan will again be speaking in DuPage County on Friday, October 8, at 6:30 PM, at the Milton Township Republican Central Committee's Viva Oktoberfest fundraiser at the Carlisle Banquet Hall in Lombard. Tickets are $45 or $400/table of ten. Contact Mark Klage at 630-668-5027 or klage@sbcglobal.net.

October 10, 2003 Oktoberfest and U.S. Senate Straw Poll

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the Milton Township Republican Central Committee’s (MTRCC) October 10 Oktoberfest and U.S. Senate straw poll including those who purchased tickets, purchased ads in the Milton Township Republican 2003-2004 Directory and event program book, and donated items for the live and silent auctions.  The Daily Herald reported on the event in its October 11 article titled “Republicans take center stage with Senate poll in DuPage.”  Over 600 attended the event.  A special thanks to Milton Precinct 9 resident Matt Ferguson for serving as the event photographer and for donating a very valuable photograph of President Bush for the auction.  A special thanks to Milton Precinct 9 resident Robert Sandberg for purchasing an ad in the event program book.  Karen and I were honored that Matt Ferguson and his wife, State Senator Chris Lauzen and his wife, and former State Senator Patrick O’Malley joined us at our table.  I had the honor of promoting the event, inviting the U.S. Senate candidates, and arranging for the straw poll.  Many thanks to the U.S. Senate candidates for agreed to the straw poll and many thanks to the Wheaton College Republicans for conducting the poll.  The six U.S. Senate candidates who attended the event – John Borling, Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, Jonathan Wright, and Jack Ryan – each gave 3-minute presentations to the audience.  Senator Lauzen spoke for U.S. Senate candidate Steve Rauschenberger who could not attend.   411 voted in the straw poll that was taken at the conclusion of the event.  Jack Ryan received 98 votes, Steve Rauschenberger 85, Andy McKenna 80, Jim Oberweis 67, Chirinjeev Kathuria 39, Jonathan Wright 23, and John Borling 19.  MTRCC’s net profit from the event last year was $20,600 and this year it might exceed $30,000.  At MTRCC’s April 2004 monthly meeting, I will make a motion for MTRCC to make a substantial contribution to the winner of the U.S. Senate primary race.

July 5, 2003 Picnic in the Prairie Path Park

Many thanks again to everyone who participated in the July 5 picnic in the Prairie Path Park.  The Daily Herald reported on the event in its July 6 article titled “Candidates get together to mingle and munch.”  The 200 attendees included seven who ran in the March 16 Republican primary election including U.S. Senate candidates Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan.  John Cox attended the picnic but he has since withdrawn from the race.  Other candidates who attended included State Representative Randy Hultgren, DuPage County Board Member Debra Olson, and DuPage County Auditor Jim Rasins.
